Senior Full Stack Software Developer

About the role

We are looking for a qualified candidate to work within our small multi-disciplinary scrum team on agile projects to help build and maintain systems for use by both staff and clients.

This is a full time position based at our office near Monument in London with a salary up to £80k with a discretionary bonus, depending on experience.

 

What will I do?

The qualified candidate will work within a small multi-disciplinary scrum team on agile projects to help build and maintain systems for use by both staff and clients. You will act as a Scrum Master, Java subject matter expert and together with the rest of the team be responsible for technical architecture, technology selection and implementation best practices. Areas that are under the remit of IT include:

  • In-house CRM (FileMaker)
  • Integrating data from 3rd party providers using an ETL and data warehousing
  • A Client Portal allowing our clients access to their investment data
  • Generation of reports, letters and other documents that are used by Financial Planning teams
  • Generating MI reports using analytics drawn from CRM, Marketing and data warehouse
  • Secure storage and control of documents by both DMS and physical file storage

The selected candidate will be reporting to the Head of Technology and working with them in their role as product owner to refine the backlog or work ready for the team.

You will be responsible for maintaining (20%), enhancing (35%) and developing (35%) internal systems in order to drive efficiencies into our business by automating processes, reducing manual touch points, increasing the visibility of key metrics to management and building beautiful reports and interfaces to deliver a great experience to our clients. In addition, you need to be flexible enough to step out from pure development and to think about the environment these systems are running in and to help setup and maintain the infrastructure (10%) in order to support our systems.

 

Qualifications

Java development using Spring and JPA is essential for this role as the successful candidate would be responsible for delivery of projects that using this technology. It is also critical that any candidate have worked successfully in an agile development environment using scrum. Highly desirable is someone who has run scrum teams in the past. Front end experience is desirable although not as critical if the candidate can demonstrate experience of utilising external development resources as outsourced partners when delivering on a multi discipline project.

 

Skills and experience

Essential

  • 5+ years’ experience in software development with the below mix most desirable
  • Very good knowledge and experience in Java. There is opportunity for using multiple languages, but a large portion of code is already in Java
  • Experience running Scrum teams for Agile development.
  • Certified Scrum Master certification
  • Ability to lead and facilitate Scrum events and ceremonies
  • Experience with Javascript (ES6+)
  • Experience with AngularJS, React or similar Javascript framework
  • Experience with build tools; npm, webpack, maven, Jenkins (CI/CD)
  • Understanding and experience developing RESTful APIs
  • Experience with version control systems, particularly Mercurial but Git experience will help
  • A desire to automate everything and the wisdom to know when not to
  • Awareness and or experience with cyber-security best practices, tools, procedures, coding standards, use of third-party software, etc.
  • Database design and SQL
    Understanding of relational databases, how they are structured and how to query them
  • Spring Framework / Maven / JPA 2.0
    Knowledge of these items and being able to get to grips with these very quickly will be essential in order to get started straight away as they are used by existing systems
  • Project delivery
    Ability to estimate projects using story points, and establish a team velocity.
    Able to report to stakeholders on project milestones and be effective at driving a self-managing team to improve through retrospectives to ensure consistent pace and quality.

Beneficial

  • DevOps
    Using Ubuntu virtual machines and Docker containers to provide internal services that assist with build, reporting and orchestration tasks
  • Understanding of financial concepts: Portfolios, Securities, Valuations, Transactions, Tax wrappers
    Beneficial but not essential, however you will need to understand these well in order to survive in this role so a desire to learn is necessary
  • Good design eye. Understanding of UX development including user journeys and HCI
  • Current stack includes Ubuntu, Docker, Nginx, Java, PHP, MySQL, FileMaker
    Experience with any or all of these is desirable
